The Story of Seaweed
Seaweed, which is classified as a type of algae, has been used all over the world for thousands of years. Since ancient times this wild and natural resource has been foraged from rocks and beach coastlines the world over for use as an important food source and aid to healing.
For thousands of years seaweed has been used by humans for many different purposes. Algae came into existence about 3.5 billion years ago and creates 75% of the air we breathe.

There are over 6000 types of seaweed. Some are suitable for human consumption or cosmetics and pharmaceutical purposes. Since the 18th century over 500 different species of seaweed / algae have been identified around the shores of Ireland.
Of the 500 species around the shores of Ireland, only a few are harvested and used commercially. Ireland is reported to have some of the best seaweed in the world due to its cold and turbulent waters off the west coast of Ireland.
Records indicate that in Ireland people started collecting seaweed or sea vegetables for thousands of years.
